What We Carry: Understanding Weight Stigma and Responding with Trauma-Informed Care

CE Hours 1

About this course

Weight influenced mental health, and mental health influenced weight, but the relationship extended far beyond behavior alone. Biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors all shaped how individuals experienced their bodies, their health, and themselves.

This three-part intermediate series examined the mental health–weight connection, the impact of weight stigma and internalized bias, and the emerging psychological implications of GLP-1 medications and modern pharmacological treatments. Designed for mental health professionals, the series combined current evidence, clinical insights, and lived experience perspectives to help clinicians better understand and support individuals navigating weight-related concerns or treatments.

Part 1 focused on weight stigma and internalized weight bias and how they affected a person's mental well-being, self-esteem, and health behaviors. It also explored why trauma-informed and stigma-sensitive approaches were important when supporting individuals experiencing weight-related distress.
