Working with Artists & Athletes: A Guide for Therapists and Other Professionals

CE Hours 2

About this course

Some artists and athletes come to therapy to improve their performance, but many others become clients to deal with pressures that others don’t typically experience. Drawing from decades of clinical experience and solid psychological research, this intermediate-level training provides a specialized training for mental health professionals on working effectively with performing artists and athletes at all levels (high school, collegiate, and professional). This three-hour workshop, led by Dr. Dave Verhaagen, explores the unique challenges faced by these high-performance populations, examining their shared traits alongside the ways in which their professional demands, vulnerabilities, and treatment needs differ. Attendees learn evidence-based strategies for addressing common clinical issues among artists and athletes, and are introduced to a research validated model of performance enhancement for improving both mental health and performance in creative and competitive pursuits.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the unique psychological stressors common to artistic and athletic fields.
  • Compare and contrast the treatment needs and professional demands of artists and athletes.
  • Explain how performance-based pressures can impact mental health outcomes in these populations.
  • Describe evidence-based strategies to address clinical concerns frequently encountered when working with artists and athletes.
  • Apply core concepts from Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement to enhance resilience, focus, and overall psychological functioning.
  • Develop a tailored treatment approach that integrates mindfulness-based techniques for clients in high-performance roles.
  • Assess the ethical considerations and cultural sensitivities involved in delivering specialized interventions to artists and athletes.
